Salamanders in a Changing Environment on Hemlock Hill

چکیده

in the environment is by monitoring animal populations over long periods. Over the past five years, for example, Robert G. Mayer has documented 126 bird species at the Arnold Arboretum, including 46 confirmed breeders and another five probable breeders. Using data from several earlier studies, Mayer was able to document the absence of at least 27 species that had once bred successfully at the Arboretum over the past century and the occurrence of seven new breeding species. In 2004 researchers at the Harvard Forest extended their studies of salamander populations in New England to the Arboretum’s Hemlock Hill. No studies of salamanders at the Arboretum existed, but we have now compiled baseline data on species composition and abundance for use in future monitoring of this ecologically important group.

Response of Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus) to Changes in Hemlock Forest Soil Driven by Invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (Adelges Tsugae)

Hemlock forests of the northeastern United States are declining due to the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) (Adelges tsugae). Hardwood species replace these forests, which affects soil properties that may influence other communities, such as red-backed salamanders (red-backs) (Plethodon cinereus). This study examined the effects of HWA invasion on soil properties and how this affects red-b...

A Little Bug with a Big Bite: Impact of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Infestations on Forest Ecosystems in the Eastern USA and Potential Control Strategies

Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand, HWA) remains the single greatest threat to the health and sustainability of hemlock in the eastern USA. The loss of hemlock trees leads to further negative impacts on the diversity and stability of ecosystems in the eastern part of North America. It is, therefore, urgent to develop effective control measures to reduce HWA populations and promote ov...

Advances in Threat Assessment and Their Application to Forest and Rangeland Management

The southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis (Zimmerman) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) (SPB), is an indigenous invasive species that infests and causes mortality to pines (Pinus spp.) throughout the Southern United States. The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae (Annand) (Homoptera: Adelgidae) (HWA), is a nonindigenous invasive species that infests and causes mortality to Easte...

Seasonal variation in microhabitat of salamanders: environmental variation or shift of habitat selection?

Relationships between species and their habitats are not always constant. Different processes may determine changes in species-habitat association: individuals may prefer different habitat typologies in different periods, or they may be forced to occupy a different habitat in order to follow the changing environment. The aim of our study was to assess whether cave salamanders change their habit...

Twelve-Year Study Monitoring Two Species of Pond-Breeding Salamanders in Northeast Ohio

Studies suggest a worldwide decline in amphibians during the last four decades, however these studies have rarely included long-term (>10 years) studies involving interacting species of North American salamanders. In this study, populations of spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) and Jefferson Salamanders (A. jeffersonianuni) at Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area in northeast Ohio we...
